The Food-Mood Connection

I just got back from San Diego for a 3-day coaching mastermind.  It was super fun, but I noticed how when I don’t eat like I do at home, I don’t feel the same…
Have you ever wondered if food was affecting your mood?
Have you ever wondered if your mood affected your food choices?
The truth is that there is definitely a cyclic thing happening with food and moods.  Today I’m going to cover a little ground on the topic, and then give you a chance to sign up for my next webinar, which will explore the topic in more detail…
First, it is estimated that 9.5% of adults (21 million) have mood disorders, and 18.1% (40 million) have anxiety disorders.  Yes, some of that is simply stress, work-related or otherwise.  But some of that is nutritional… Here are just a few of the working parts:
Blood Sugar fluctuations & mood swings
  • When blood sugar levels rise after you eat, you suppress orexin (your alertness hormone)When blood sugars drop, you become impatient, irritable and angry (your survival hormones)
  • Obviously are diets, being full of refined grains, sugars, starches, etc. and too much of the wrong kind of fat means that we are creating TONS of MOOD SWINGS as our blood sugar never stabilizes.
The Gut & Our “2nd Brain”
  • We have tons of receptors in the gut, that depending on the kind of food we eat, send different signals to the brain.  An inflamed gut is thus an an unhappy brain!  Recent research is showing gut bacteria influencing cravings as well as mood!  So much so that the gut is now being called the “2nd Brain”!
Fatty Acids Deficiency
  • 70% of the brain is fat.  Without proper amount of fatty acids, we increase our risk for depression and mood disorders.  It is estimated approximately 90% of adults are deficient!  What is at stake?  For mood-related issues, namely the ability to learn, and depression.
Stress & Food Choice
  • Stress decreases appetite, boost adrenaline levels, and makes us crave “crash” foods like soda, sugar, salt, wrong kind of fat!  These foods rob us of the amino acids, fats, etc. that we need to feel good!
To get a handle on our mood, we need to make the right food choices, supplement with the right amino acids, engage in regular stress reduction activities, and learn as much as we can about how what we eat affect how we feel…
Nutrition Challenge Increase your fatty acids this week!
What’s the best?  Try Flaxseeds… Their nutrient density is very good, and they pack a very powerful punch in terms of omega 3 fatty acids…
